The Lycian Way: Following History, Nature and Adventure

For me, the Lycian Way is more than a walking route. It is a special path where every step begins another story, bringing you closer to nature and yourself.

The deep blue Mediterranean coast, the scent of pine forests, ancient stone paths, small villages and traces of Lycia stretching back thousands of years…

Walking among them, you feel time slow down a little.

What is the Lycian Way?

One of Türkiye’s most remarkable long-distance walking routes, the Lycian Way follows the ancient region of Lycia from Fethiye to Antalya.

Different sections take you through sea views, forest trails, ancient cities and village roads, each with its own landscape.

But the scenery alone is not what makes the Lycian Way special.

Its real beauty lies in the journey itself.

What does walking the Lycian Way feel like?

Imagine putting on your backpack early in the morning and setting off.

During the first few kilometres, your body settles into the rhythm of walking. Then a trail curves ahead and the blue Mediterranean suddenly appears.

Before long, you find yourself walking over ancient stones.

Sometimes you move through the quiet forest; sometimes along paths just above the sea.

Sometimes we talk, and sometimes we all fall silent.

In nature, there is often more to listen to than to say.

Birdsong, wind moving through the trees, the sound of our feet on the stones…

The Lycian Way is also a journey of learning to notice these things.

Walking through a story thousands of years old

One of the most striking things about the Lycian Way is how history and nature intertwine.

As you walk, you may come across a rock tomb, an ancient structure, an old stone wall or a path used for centuries.

Pause for a moment and you realise that people walked over these same stones thousands of years ago.

At that moment, today’s walk meets the past.

Following the same trail today, we become part of a story that has continued for millennia.

Is it an easy walk?

Not every part of the Lycian Way has the same difficulty.

Some stages are gentler; others involve long ascents and descents, rocky ground and uneven paths.

When preparing for a Lycian Way walk, you need to consider the route’s physical demands as well as its scenery.

If you ask me, though, the story of a trail like this would feel incomplete without a little effort.

The view waiting at the top of a hill, the bay reached after a long walk, the conversations shared at the end of the day…

Tiredness gives way to wonderful memories.

Why walk the Lycian Way?

Because sometimes we need a few days away from city life.

To turn down our phones, stop rushing, look at the sky and simply walk…

To sit in a tree’s shade and catch our breath…

To spend a few quiet minutes looking at the sea…

To meet new people and share the same path…

And perhaps to give ourselves a little more time.

This is why I love walking in nature.

Nature reminds us just how simple and beautiful life can be.

The Lycian Way with Safaritrek

At Safaritrek, a trekking event means more than completing a certain number of kilometres.

What matters to us is experiencing the journey together, respecting nature, protecting historic places and making good memories.

We will follow ancient paths, walk beside Mediterranean views, breathe in nature and come a little closer to Lycia’s ancient story.

Perhaps we will grow tired.

Perhaps some hills will call for a few extra pauses to catch our breath.

At the end of the day, though, each of us will have something to take home:

The story of a beautiful journey.

Some paths do more than take you somewhere.

They bring you back a little changed.

For me, the Lycian Way is exactly that kind of path.

If you are ready, let’s walk it together this time.
